I don’t have any experience with one, but it seems to me that the shaft drive might have more disadvantages than advantages. It’d be nice to avoid the grime and open moving parts of a chain, but there’s a reason they normally use chains. Chain drives are light, efficient, they can handle lots of torque, they are robust, and they are easy to fix. I suspect the gears in the shaft drive will lose on all those fronts.
…and you can get rid of the grime by using Pedro’s Ice Wax and maintaining it.
