Wikipedia China December 2, 2006

Posted by Unreasonable in Matters Democratic.

CNet has an article comparing Wikipedia in English to the Chinese version. The Chinese contributers have been censoring themselves to try to avoid government censorship.

The Chinese site currently has about 100,000 entries. The Chinese Government has been blocking it for its citizens for a year, but they lifted the ban in November. After about a week, the ban was back.

Here’s the beginning of the entry on the US:

United States of America (United States of America), it is called the United States, formerly Citicorp, North America is a federal republic in the country.

I don’t know if it’s the writer or the translator that thinks we used to be called Citicorp. Obviously, they meant “in the future it will be called Citicorp…”
